[They wandered across the] spacious grounds that led down to the River Tweed. People wandered in and out of a large white tent with folding chairs and vases full of flowers. Grassy terraces descended to the water through an arched doorway in the hedge. This opened into a small, empty paddock which, in turn, let them out just above the river where a stony shingle, laced with buttercups and wild grasses, bordered the stream.
